In 1883 trouwde Margaretha Halberstadt in Amsterdam met Jonas van Geens, die zelf uit Meppel kwam. Hij was een zoon van Hartog Elias van Geens en Vrouwtje Abraham Stibbe. Jonas begon als borstelmaker, ook wel schuijermaker genoemd. Daarna ontwikkelde hij zich door tot koopman in klederen.
