Sieg Kanstein is op 18 mei 1908 te Passau in Duitsland geboren als zoon van Julius Kanstein (1877-1947) en Cilly Prölsdorfer (1886-1955). Hij verhuist met zijn ouders naar Frankfurt am Main.
