Hartog Erwteman was a son of Hijman Erwteman and Heintje Polak. He left Amsterdam already in October 1921 and went to Antwerp in order to work in the diamond industry. There he met his wife Hendrika Cardozo, a daughter of Jacob Cardozo and Elisabeth Koekoek, to whom he married in Antwerp on 15 April 1924. On 2 May 1930 at Bouwhandelstraat 59 in Borgerhout, their son Henri was born.
Hartog Erwteman was deported from Mechelen to Auschwitz with Convoy 17 on 31 October 1942. His wife Hendrika was already deported to Auschwitz - together with their son Henri - with Convoy 8 on 8 September 1942.
Hartog was born in a family with six children, of whom his sister Schoontje as survived the war, however, a few months later already on 3 June 1945 she passed away in Antwerp. His other siblings, Soesman, Simon, Jetje and Juda have been killed all during the Holocaust
