Barend Josua Katan was a son of Samuel Katan and Rijntje Polak.

On 1 May 1932 Barend Josua Katan succeeded Samuel Dasberg as rabbi to the Jewish community of Dordrecht. He came from Amsterdam and was assisted by Hartog van Beugen.
