Salomon Eckstein moved from his place of birth in Uithuizen to Apeldoorn in 1904. In 1912 he became a nurse at the Jewish psychiatric institution Het Apeldoornse Bos, where he met the student nurse Sara de Meza in 1913. The two were married in 1917 and in 1919 had a child who survived the war. On the eve of their deportation, the Eckstein family lived at 16 Osseveldseweg in Apeldoorn.
