David Jacob Gokkes

David Jacob Gokkes, "Dete" among friends, went to the Montessori grade school in Amsterdam-Zuid. The Gokkes family lived there before they were forced to move to the so-called Judenviertel. One of Dete's old friends came over to visit him in his new neighbourhood.

Simon Gokkes married Rebecca Winnik, the daughter of Rachel Winnik-Koopman and Jacob Winnik, on 22 November 1922. Simon was born on 21 March 1897 in Amsterdam as the son of David Gokkes and Rachel Rimini. Rebecca Winnik was born on 5 September 1895. Before the war Simon Gokkes’s family lived at Bronkhorststraat 48 in the south district of Amsterdam. His father Simon worked nearby, at the conservatory. In the war, the family was forced to move to the ‘Jewish neighbourhood’ near the Nieuwmarkt. They were deported from the address in Tilanusstraat, in the east district of Amsterdam.

David was een leerling van de 1e Montessorischool aan de Corellistraat in Amsterdam. In deze school is een plaquette aangebracht waarop zijn naam staat vermeld.

Davids naam komt ook voor op een van de koffers van het kunstwerk In Memoriam van Willem Volkersz.

Van de 172 (oud-)leerlingen van de 1e Montessorischool in Amsterdam die in de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden vermoord waren er 169 joods. Zij staan hier in de rechter kolom alfabetisch vermeld.
