Max was a German refugee. He came to the Netherlands on December 21st, 1938 and stayed at first in the Rivierenhuis in de Steeg. He then lived in many different places: Arnhem, Soesterberg, Amsterdam (Oostelijke Handelskade 12, Vondelhof) and in September 1940 he moved to Wieringen.
