Bernard Maarssen

Bernard Maarssen was a student at the Hogere Textielschool (institute for textile studies) in Enschede. After the summer holiday of 1941, Jewish students were barred from the school. In the hall of the former Hogere Textielschool on the Ariënsplein a plaque lists the names of students, teachers and former students who did not survive the war. Bernard Maarssen is listed here.

Bernard Maarssen zou op 30 november 1942 in Auschwitz zijn omgekomen, net als zijn broer Mozes en Salomon Alexander Maarssen. Dit kan erop wijzen dat hij met hetzelfde transport no. 14 van 03.08.1942 vanuit Franse kamp Pithiviers naar Auschwitz is gedeporteerd.

Bernard Maarssen is één van de vier zonen van de Rotterdamse deurwaarder en zionist Jacques Maarssen en Anna Henriette Maarssen-Polak. Zij probeerden hun zoons in 1942 naar Zwitserland te laten vluchten. Dat mislukte. Het laatste levensteken dat de ouders van Bernard ontvingen was een brief uit het 'Arbeitslager' Birkenau 'bei Neu Berun, Über-Schlesien.
